OUR JOURNEY
While these responses save and improve lives, they do not strengthen local systems for research, production, delivery, and financing. Healthy diets remain expensive and out of reach for most people in places like Afghanistan, Somalia, and Yemen and the private sector providers remain uninvested in solving food security challenges. Life Saving Foods spearheads two core product lines:
OUR PRODUCTS
Life Saving Foods Product Lines
Fortified Foods
R&D and creation of nutrient fortification in local staples (rice, maize, wheat), newborn baby foods, and foods for senior citizens, based on local demand, taste profiles and local production. For example, nutrient rich pasta alternatives and fortified staple grains.
Life Saving Foods (LSF) is leading in the production of fortified foods in Somalia and making strategic investments in the research, development, and production of locally adapted fortified foods to prevent nutritional emergencies.
Our first product is fortified instant noodles. We use multigrain flour and fortify it with sodium, zinc, iron, retinal, thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, pyridoxine, folic acid and cab amine to provide a high-energy and nutritious meal. The noodles are easy and quick to prepare, have a 12-month shelf life and appeal across age groups. We are currently testing the product in the Somalia market with plans to scale up production in early 2023.
Therapeutic Foods
Ready-to-Use Supplementary Foods (RUSF) and Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Foods (RUTF) are energy-dense, micronutrient-enhanced products used in therapeutic feeding in clinical and community settings for children with severe and acute malnutrition.
Life Saving Foods (LSF) is establishing a modern green field factory in Mogadishu to expand and diversify the supply of emergency therapeutic foods in Somalia.
LSF aims to become the leading local supplier of RUTF/RUSF to humanitarian partners in the next few years. For the longer term, LSF is investing in local farmers to source industry standard ingredients for the products locally.
